DVD - Centennial: The Complete Series
|
Rating: -
Sadly, they don't make television epic dramas like this one anymore. The outstanding cast, spectacular scenery, and excellent background music all made James Michener's outstanding novel come to life. Richard Chamberlain as McKeag and Robert Conrad as Pasquinel are wonderful as early frontier trappers. Raymond Burr, Alex Karras, Dennis Weaver, Timothy Dalton, Lynn Redgrave, Anthony Zerbe, Brian Keith and many more fine actors all give wonderful performances.
It has been often said that the movie or TV version of an author's book does not do justice to the book, but in this case I would say all those involved in making the television series got it just right. Many of Michener's books tend to be very long and his novel Centennial is no exception. The DVD version is 6 disks and about 21 hours in length. A movie version could never cover the sweeping time period he wrote about in the book. Only television had the time to do justice to the novel.
I was very pleased to see Centennial come out in DVD format and at a very reasonable price. It had been around for a long time in a VCR format but it was priced much higher.
This DVD epic series is for all those people that love to read all the books James Michener wrote or want a good story about the American frontier west.

Best program EVER on TV. Great story, superb acting, a lot of it histroically accurate. Have loved it for 30 yrs.

I watched this when it first came out on television. I paid a bundle years ago for the VHS set. Now I am glad to see it at a reasonable price on dvd. It will be a much more enjoyable watch on dvd.
Keep in mind that while this series does touch on actual events in U.S. history it is a fictional story; not a documentary.
One reviewer who gave it a low rating seems to have missed that point. It is not intended to be "politically correct" (and how I HATE that phrase and way of thinking).
I love this series. I watched it again recently on my vhs tapes and now I am buying the dvd set so that when my sister and brother come over after Christmas for food and movies I can offer this one.
