Editorial Review:
Description: A young woman on the verge of marriage departs for a whirlwind guided tour of 9 countries in 18 days. The group she meets helps her decide if she should commit to the middle class life she's headed for or make a life-changing commitment to freedom and fun!
Amazon.com: Suzanne Pleshette, who never got the career she deserved, achieved TV success as the skeptical wife on The Bob Newhart Show, but If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium--a 1969 comedy about tourists on a speed tour of Europe--shows off the movie star that Pleshette could have been. The movie sounds like an excuse for a lot of cheap gags, and there are plenty of broad jokes, but they're balanced by sly satirical bits that cut both ways (the vulgar Americans and the cynical Europeans get equally mocked). Even more unexpected are moments of lyricism, cross-cultural generosity, and bittersweetness, such as when a veteran finally re-meets the Italian woman he's been holding a torch for since World War II. These swift but skillful vignettes get fleshed out by a great crew of late-60s character actors and comedians. Holding the episodes together is the ongoing flirtation between Pleshette's no-nonsense Minnesota businesswoman and the wily British tour guide played by Ian McShane (fans of Deadwood will gape in astonishment at his boyish youth). McShane is shamelessly charming, but Pleshette is ravishing, both sensible and drop-dead sexy. The combination sounds improbable, but when she's standing on a balcony, drowsily surveying Rome in the morning light, and wearing nothing but a man's shirt, Pleshette fuses what-the-hell pleasure with the knowledge that, sometimes, things just don't work out. She's heartbreaking and resilient; this woman should have been a star. If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium is a deeply enjoyable movie with a unique combination of humor and humanity that holds up remarkably well. --Bret Fetzer

What a sensational find! The film is a snapshot of a much simpler, and nicer time.
This was a well shot, lovely looking film - with a best-in-class-cast.
Suzanne is the focus here, and is 100% authentic playing a lady searching for meaning in her life. The stories of all the cast build upon each other, and ring true-- you do care.
This film was a benchmark, made at the end of the 60's with a sensitive touch. Excellent in every way.

This flick is a ton of fun!!! This quasi-documentary travelogue takes you across Europe with quirky Americans, as opposed to the ugly kind, and makes you wish you could plop in a seat next to them. Though the cast is littered with familiar character actors they seem like normal tourists that you wouldn't bat a second eye at. The actors seem to be having alot of fun and that is infectuous to the audience. The vignettes and jokes come at you at rapid fire pace and the laugh quotient is extremely ... Read More

This may be my favorite all-time movie for it makes me feel so good to watch it. No matter how many times I see it, I laugh throughout. The characters in it are so much fun!
The storylines of allof the characters are just charming. And the travel aspects of the plot are so true, anyone who has taken a bus tour can relate.
If you haven't seen this movie, please do so. I can assure you that you won't regret it. Cast, plot, cameos, scenery all are first rate.

I remember seeing this film in 1969. It is still funny. I used to travel a lot and had many of the same experiences as portrayed in this film. If you buy a copy of this DVD you will NOT be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the movie. It so reminded me of a similar tour through Europe in 1977 and again in 1983. Only my group was not adults but with high school students and I was the teacher. However, each time the students were wonderful and really appreciated what they learned and appreciated the U.S. even more.
