We started using one right away, and the smell of hot plastic made me postpone opening the other one until I was sure the smell was temporary. When it hadn't gone away after 28 days, I returned the second one. I'm sensitive to odors like that. If they don't bother you, it's a decent heater in other respects; if they do, you may want to run it somewhere else for a good long time before you bring it into your living space. I used to have a very good heater made by Lifetime which was the best until it finally broke after 5 years of service.
