Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Obviously this collection of old pop hits is aimed at the smooth jazz set, not the mainstream jazz crowd, and by its standards, it gets the job done with its carefully produced blend of shimmering atmospheric effects, spare horn charts, lite grooves, breathy female background voices--and, of course, White's ringing melodic statements, for which he should be called Mr. Clean--if he isn't already. The songs include Van Morrison's 'Crazy Love,' Ray Charles' 'Hit the Road, Jack,' Burt Bacharach's 'The Look of Love' and Bobby Hebb's inevitable 'Sunny.' The guest performers include Jonathan Butler, Bob James, and Jeffrey Osborne. --Lloyd Sachs

I've never heard a single bad Peter White track, let alone album. There's a unique lightness and transparency in his play - listening to it repeatedly you can't help thinking that there's never a redundant sound or a note, and each one he plays has been carefully selected. Although personally I prefer recordings where Mr. White plays masterpieces of his own composition, this compillation of old hits is also top quality, so both those familiar with his works and those new to them won't be disappointed. ... I've have several other Peter White CD's, Confidential & Reveillez-Vous. They are excellent CD's and really show his talent! What happened to Playin Favorites, seems everyone took a nap during the production of this recording, including Mr. White. I was ready for a nap about half way through this CD! This one went back into the jewel case and has remained there since.

As a long-time Peter White fan, I try to catch his concerts and keep up with his records. Unfortunately, this is one of his weakest efforts, far below "Confidential" and the Christmas album. The song selection here, pop favorites such as "Mr. Magic" and others, is the problem. Peter plays these straight down the middle, displaying little improvisational creativity or passion. Strictly dentist office music here.

If Peter White didn't create the genre of Smooth Jazz Guitar all on his own he certainly epitomizes it and continues to consistently set the standards for everyone else. Effortlessly sparkling on tunes that he clearly loves he brings his delightful and instantly recognisable style and phrasing to all these standards which are somehow clearly "old school" but reinvented at the same time.
If there isnt a standout that's simply because there isnt a bad track on this set. Give it a listen and get hooked ... Read More
