Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video: On her first day of work, Sue Applegate (Ginger Rogers) has to escape the clutches of a lecherous client (Robert Benchley, whose favorite line is 'Why don't you slip out of that wet coat and into a dry martini?'). Fed up with the big city, Sue decides to head home to Iowa with the precious $27.50 train fare she's kept in a sealed envelope since her arrival. The fare has gone up, however, and she is forced to pose as a 12-year-old to buy a half-price ticket. On the train, she has to dodge the suspicious conductors and bursts into the compartment of Major Phillip Kirby (Ray Milland), who falls for Sue's masquerade and harbors her for the night. The situation is further complicated by the major's fiancée (Rita Johnson) and her savvy 12-year-old sister (Diana Lynn), the only one who sees through the ruse. Add a stay at the major's academy and some escapades with young, hormone-driven cadets, and you have an enjoyable, if not quite classic, silly comedy, well paced by Billy Wilder in his first directorial effort. Rogers's real-life mother appears in a small role as Sue's mother. Rogers is only occasionally convincing as a 12-year-old, but after all she was 30 at the time. --David Horiuchi

Beautiful Susan Applegate (Ginger Rogers) is tired of New York where she constantly has to compromise her morality just to get along. She decides to return home and goes to the train station to purchase a ticket. Unfortunately, the rates have gone up. Angry but not beaten, she dons a costume very much like that of a little girl and convinces an innocent bystander to buy her a half fare ticket. Off she goes, but the conductor isn't convinced she's under twelve. She escapes into a man's quarters, Major ... Read More

The Art of Storytelling: How To Write A Story....Any Story
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake
THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR (1942) marked the directing debut of Billy Wilder, who co-wrote the script with Charles Brackett.
Entertaining, though dated, this is a strange film that probably could not be made today.
Ginger Rogers stars as a young woman, defeated by life in New York City, who decides to return to her small home town in Ohio. Unfortunately, ... Read More

To begin with this is one of my all time favorite films, classic, adorable and always entertaining time and time again.
It's easy to fall into the story, Ginger Rogers is just delightful as Susan Applegate and Ray Milland is charming as 'Uncle Phillip'. (I could only wish to be so lucky with the strangers I encounter whilst traveling)
The strange and unusual situation is just hilarious(and perhaps at times a bit creepy? Though obviously I seem to like it!) Watching 'little sue-sue' ... Read More

The Major and the Minor has long been a favorite of the entire family. Our VHS was worn out from repeated viewing and so having the film on DVD is wonderful. Ginger Rodgers finds out that working in the big city is not all it is cracked up to be. She decides to return home but discovers she lacks sufficient funds to return home. She opts to dress and pretend to be a child because children can ride the train for half fare. The result is a series of humorous events and circumstances that will bring many a smile. ... Read More

'The Major and the Minor' is a sweet, innocent, light-hearted comedy romance that could only come out of the '40's ('42 to be exact). The storyline will keep the audience amused from beginning to end, the cast is stellar and Ray Milland and Ginger Rogers have more than enough chemistry and good looks to please both sexual persuasions.
However to make this plot work for the viewer one must be willing to suspend reality and accept the possibility that a group of intelligent, adults can be deceived into ... Read More
