His epic The World at War remains unsurpassed as the definitive visual history of World War II. The Second World War was different from other wars in thousands of ways, one of which was the unparalleled scope of visual documents kept by the Axis and Allies of all their activities. As a result, this war is understood as much through written histories as it is through its powerful images. The Nazis were particularly thorough in documenting even the most abhorrent of the atrocities they were committing--in a surprising amount of color footage. The World at War was one of the first television documentaries that exploited these resources so completely, giving viewers an unbelievable visual guide to the greatest event in the 20th century. This is to say nothing of the excellent, comprehensible narrative. The only reasonable way to tackle a subject of such scope is by making several mini movies, which they have done. Olivier's superb naration ties them together, and the footage chosen is first rate, with minimal but worthwhile survivor interviews. The Pacific war gets its due, as do other minor theaters. Gives insight into each country and their citizens affected by WWII. Rating: - an outstanding offer The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition) I have this series in VHS but don't have a player anymore, so I was surprised to find it on Amazon. I never expected to find the series on DVD. Amazon's price is the best around. I almost paid $30 or more for it in stores. This is an excellent, historical, series on World War II. Rating: - Gift Gave these dvd's to a friend for Christmas. He loved them. He's a bit of a history buff...all eras, and said that some of the footage in these, blew him away:) Rating: - Complete History of World War II This set is a complete history of World War II from Europe to the Pacific. The video and commentary are spectacular! Time Life's t.v. advertisement offers 4 discs for nearly the same price as this complete set of 11 discs!
