Product Description: In this breakthrough book, the CEO and president of Working Mother magazine reveals innovative solutions of how working moms successfully (and joyfully) balance career and family
At a time when highly educated women are 'opting out' of successful careers because the challenges of 'doing it all' are too great, it would seem safe to conclude that working and motherhood don’t mix. But for those who want to work, and those who must work for financial reasons, This Is How We Do It focuses instead on the joy and fulfillment that working motherhood can bring. Drawing on original research culled from five hundred working mothers; on the wisdom of, Working Mother magazine’s nearly 3 million readers; and on the best practices of its highly competitive '100 Best Companies' list, this timely book targets the 26 million working mothers in this country—as well as the companies that want to employ them— helping readers transition from a work life to a life that works.

I really didn't care for this book very much. It seems focused on telling you all the ways to make it "OK" for you to almost never be with your kids and not even feel guilty about it. The saddest part was the recommendation to have a "team" of people you can call on to take care of your children so you can stay at work. I would have liked to have seen more talk about tips and ways to communicate to your employer why you need to have work-life balance and flexibility. I did in my own personal life, ... Read More

the author is a good writer, and the book is laid out well. however, i didn't find this book that helpful, inspiring or insightful for my personal transition back into the workplace as a new mom. it's full of obvious statistics based on very basic surveys. i felt like it focused a lot on women working for huge companies, and didn't really talk much about how to really do "it" every day with details and examples (it did talk about a few big hurdles--like making proposals to your employer and the high ... This is a MUST READ for working moms or moms considering returning to the workforce. Within the first 30 pages of this book, so many of my "issues" with being a working mom had been addressed and I was already feeling less guilt about having my kids in daycare while I continue with my career. This book is inspiring, sometimes funny, and incredibly straight-forward and practical. I just wish I'd read it years ago!!

Terrific book. I gave it 4 stars, not 5, because you have to be especially talented or overachieving to get a break in the workplace--most of us are ordinary, probably won't make it to VP, etc., in which case you may find you're not valuable enough to the company to get the kinds of breaks the author describes. Her examples are overwhelmingly women who are already in power positions, and that doesn't help most of us.
Having said that, the specific concepts are a great help, especially in ... Read More
