Product Description: Unleash your creative potential.
Michael J. Gelb, bestselling author of How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci, draws upon history's most revolutionary minds to help you unleash your own creativity. With fascinating biographies of all ten geniuses, personal self-assessments, and practical exercises, this book is the key to unlocking the genius inside you!
Plato -- Deepening your love of wisdom
Filippo Brunelleschi -- Expanding your perspective
Christopher Columbus -- Strengthening your vision, optimism, and courage
Nicolaus Copernicus -- Reorganizing your vision of the world
Queen Elizabeth I -- Wielding your power with balance and effectiveness
William Shakespeare -- Cultivating your emotional intelligence
Thomas Jefferson -- Celebrating your freedom in the pursuit of happiness
Charles Darwin -- Developing your powers of observation and cultivating an open mind
Mahatma Gandhi -- Applying the principles of spiritual genius to harmonize spirit, mind, and body
Albert Einstein -- Unleashing your imagination and 'combinatory play'
Amazon.com Review: The introduction to Discover Your Genius shows off the double meaning of the book's title in plain language: it is meant to help you find both your own potential for greatness and a meaningful role model to provide focus. In an effort to lead you to both simultaneously, Michael J. Gelb has created a combination workbook, guided journal, and historical biography of 10 outstanding humans.
Arranged chronologically, Discover Your Genius begins with Plato and ends with Einstein, meeting up with Brunelleschi, Columbus, Copernicus, Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Jefferson, Darwin, and Ghandi in between. Each chapter highlights a few specific achievements while analyzing the methods and motivations of the geniuses in question.
Accompanying exercises encourage you to talk with friends, create lists and goals, seek additional reading and musical selections, and uncover your dreams. From designing a personal coat of arms filled with meaningful symbols to developing the habit of taking regular walks, these exercises balance quickly achievable activities with ongoing life changes. Several chapters urge you to involve your friends, with evenings of special, themed dinners, like the toga party with Symposium Lamb Delight, gallons of wine, and recitations of personal 'odes to love.'
What you'll get out of all this is dependent on your own individual views of history and politics, but keep in mind it's hard to find a truly great figure who is not controversial. If you are able to overlook the inherent hypocrisy in, for example, Thomas Jefferson (slave owner) as bastion of personal freedom, and the great explorers' (Columbus) direct responsibility for a number of known atrocities, you'll find plenty to ponder and enjoy. --Jill Lightner

I honestly did not intend to buy this book. I wanted to get free shipping and was browsing bargain books. This gold nugget appeared and I decided to give it a shot. When this book arrived, the contents were amazing. The author illustrates through words and exercises how to actually think like many famous geniuses. From Plato to Gandhi to Einstein, you will find someone you can relate to many times over. The exercises are fantastic and get your brain juices going. I highly recommend this.

I actually got this book before Gelb's 'How to Think Like Da Vinci.' It actucally motivated me to get the first book. An EXCELLENT book to have to recharge your creativity batteries. 'Nuff said. Excelent is about as good as it gets.

There are many good books with research based studies on how to improve your IQ or creativity on the market. Unfortunately, this book isn't one of them. Most of the exercises just seemed like silly stuff the author thought up on his own without any testing or research to prove the exercises actually work. For example, in the chapter on Columbus, one of the exercises is to get the tub with your sweetie, splash around and try to chart new waters in your relationship. For another example, the chapter ... This is one of my favorite books. I like it so much, I've sent at least 50 to my customers.
One of the best chapters is about Christopher Columbus, who according to Michael Gelb, may have been America's fisrt salesman!
Lots of good stuff!

I thought the short biographies were interesting. I listened to the audio book while I was driving. A sizeable portion of the book was exercises, most of which didn't interest me. A few of them made me think a tiny bit. The good thing this book did do for me, was got me interested in the author's choice of a dream team. It sparked me to do some of my own research with his choices.
