Product Description:
Shirley Temple Wong sails from China to America with a heart full of dreams. Her new home is Brooklyn, New York. America is indeed a land full of wonders, but Shirley doesn't know any English, so it's hard to make friends. Then a miracle-baseball-happens. It is 1947, and Jackie Robinson, star of the Brooklyn Dodgers, is everyone's hero. Jackie Robinson is proving that a black man, the grandson of a slave, can make a difference in America and for Shirley as well, on the ball field and off, America becomes the land of opportunity.

This is a wonderful story of a young Chinese girl who immigrates to the US with her mother in 1947.
The story is just great - it is rich with historical detail, and the main character is completely lovable. The reader gets a very realistic picture of what life was like for a young immigrant at that time.
The book is also hilarious - the author is a gifted story teller who has a brilliant sense of humor.
Cautious parents may want to know that there is ... Read More

Jackie Robinson and the Year of the Boar is an OK book. It shows how life was for an immigrant in the 1940's. It also gives you a taste of how Jackie Robinson felt to cross the racial line.

This book also showed, how even if you're mistreated in the beginning, you can still ... Read More

I would recommend this book for boys and girls of any age. I would recommend this book for girls, because the main character Shirley Temple Wong is a girl, and what she does the girls can mostly understand. I would recomend it for boys, because there is a lot of baseball involved, and the year of baseball is staring Jackie Robinson. The genre of the book is multi cultural. The theme is bravery, hope, and overcoming fears. The most important setting is Shirley's school. The conflict is Shirley ... Read More

My daughter didn't really enjoy reading this book. She became bored with the issues and wanted more excitement and kindness.

I love this book. This book tells you how to overcome loneliness. Shirley found a way to make some good friends. I would have you read this book because it lets you learn what it would feel like to move from one place to another. It also tells you how different and unique other people can be. It's a really good book. (written by my sixth grade student, Ashley)
